Finishing & Fabrication Methods

Edge finishing is what transforms a sample or fabricated rug into a room-ready piece. The method you choose affects durability, aesthetics, and how the rug reads in a space. Below is a guide to the finishing and fabrication options available through Harcourt Collection.

Hand Serging

Hand serging is the most refined of our finishing techniques. A skilled artisan wraps yarn tightly around the carpet edge by hand, creating a clean, durable border approximately ⅜″ to ½″ wide. The process is meticulous and time-consuming — and the results show it. The serging thread can be matched to the carpet for a subtle effect, or contrasted for a decorative border. Ideal for natural fiber styles (wool, silk) with a thicker pile that may not be suited to machine finishing, and for any project where a premium, artisan-quality edge is the goal.

Best for High-end residential, natural fibers, thick pile constructions.

Organic Serging

Organic serging uses a machine process that twists multiple wool yarn colors together to create a sophisticated edge that closely mimics the look of hand serging — at a faster turnaround and a more accessible price point. The finished edge is approximately ⅜″ wide and is currently available in blended wool yarns. An elegant option when hand serging timelines or budgets do not fit the project.

Best for Projects that want the hand-serged aesthetic with a shorter lead time.

Wool Serging

Wool serging wraps a wool yarn finish around the carpet edge, creating a warm, natural-looking border that complements natural fiber constructions. It delivers excellent durability and a clean finish suited to both residential and commercial applications.

Best for Natural fiber carpets, traditional and transitional interiors.

1¼″ Infinity Binding / Mock Hem

The Infinity Binding creates a smooth, tailored edge with a folded mock hem detail that gives the rug a polished, furniture-quality finish. At 1¼″ wide, it reads as refined and intentional — an excellent choice for traditional and transitional interiors where the edge should feel considered but not decorative.

Best for Traditional, transitional, and formal residential interiors.

1¼″ Synthetic Binding

A clean, precise machine-applied binding in synthetic fabric. At 1¼″ wide, it offers a neat, low-profile finish that works across a wide range of carpet styles and room settings. One of our most versatile and accessible options, and one of the fastest to fabricate.

Best for Most carpet styles. Ideal when a clean edge and quick turnaround are the priority.

3″ Cotton Binding

Our 3″ cotton binding provides a more prominent edge — ideal when you want the finish to read as a design detail rather than simply a border. Available in a range of colors to coordinate or contrast with the carpet. A popular choice for traditional and classic interiors where the binding is part of the composition.

Best for Traditional, classic, and layered interiors. Great for color-matching or creating contrast.

5″ Cotton Binding

For a bold, statement-making edge, our 5″ cotton binding creates a wide decorative border that brings a custom, tailored look to any rug. Particularly effective on solid or texture styles where the binding becomes a visible, intentional design element.

Best for Solid and texture styles. Interiors where the rug edge is meant to be seen.

Leather Binding

A premium option for projects that call for exceptional materiality. Our leather binding wraps the rug edge in genuine leather, adding richness and tactile contrast that elevates any installation. Available by special order.

Best for High-end residential, hospitality, and statement installations.
